The TearLab Osmolarity System is one of test we as Drs use to objectively and quantitatively test for diagnosing and managing Dry Eye patients.

The TearLab Osmolarity System is intended to measure the osmolarity of human tears to aid in the diagnosis of dry eye disease in patients suspected of having dry eye disease, in conjunction with other methods of clinical evaluation.
Fast and accurate results in seconds using only 50 nanoliters (nL) of tear film to diagnose Dry Eye Disease

What Is Hyperosmolarity?

Osmolarity is simply a measure of solid particles in a solution. So
hyperosmolarity means an increased number of particles in the solution.

In regards to tears,
hyperosmolarity means less water and more salt than typical tears. In other words, osmolarity changes in dry eye are are predominately to change in the water content, rather than alterations in tear composition

What's My Number?
Only a doctor can determine if you have Dry Eye Disease. As Drs we determine the testing needed as you describe your dry eye symptoms and the impact that they have on your daily life. We will perform several tests to assess your condition. The TearLab® Osmolarity Test gives us information about the salt content of your tears, which is an indicator of Dry Eye Disease.

Tear osmolarity has been shown to have the excellent predictive value for diagnosing Dry Eye Disease . TearLab's sophisticated lab on a chip technology tests a tiny tear sample to measure Osmolarity, or the salt content in the tears. We will test both eyes, and will take the highest number of the two tests, to generate Your Osmolarity Number. Your Osmolarity Number us a meaningful measure of the health and stability of the protective tear film that covers the surface of your eyes. The number generated correlates with the severity of the disease. What's Your Number?

Test Results Each of the above methods provides a numeric osmolarity measurement. The higher the measurement, the “drier” the eye.
• 316mOsmol/L and higher indicates dry eye (hyperosmolarity). • 290mOsmol/L to 316mOsmol/L suggests borderline or intermittent dry eye. • 290mOsmol/L and below is healthy and normal.
